Before & After: Curated Storytelling

To kickoff our Before & After series, let us take you on a tour behind-the-scenes of a comprehensive effort that showcases Adorna's multi-disciplinary skillsets. At over 7,000sf, this Colonial style home expanded its footprint and simultaneously underwent a whole-home renovation beginning down to the studs. In it's original state, the home was dated and partitioned off which inhibited physical and visual flow, as well as daylight. We solved for this by designing an open floor plan concept for the heart of the home, stringing together the central axis, from Foyer to new rear addition encompassing the main kitchen, dining and living spaces.

This effort embodies many of our values as a design team, with unparalleled character, an emphasis on craftsmanship, and a sustainable approach. Elements like reclaimed wood, salvaged masonry, handmade tile, concrete countertops, statement lighting, and natural textiles were composed for a collected and storied feel.

The overall inspiration was the simplicity and moodiness of English interiors, with pieces from the client’s woodworking ancestors informing the decor. From architectural design inception through project completion, we were uniquely fit to transform this home into an intimate, emotive, and memorable environment.

Foyer

As the gateway inside, this dreamy foyer frames views back to the illuminated addition and establishes a palette of materials mindfully carried throughout the home.

Fireplace

This brick was salvaged from a demolished historic Philadelphia rowhome. The new narrower width of the brick now emphasizes the lofty ceiling height, and its rustic character is complimentary to the reclaimed white oak floors, burnished brass accents & neutral furnishings.

Addition

These historic salvaged beams now serve two critical roles: beautifully expressed structural collar ties and a surface upon which electrical conduit illuminates the ceiling above and provides task lighting to counters below. The rustic texture and tone against the white vaulted ceiling draws your eye up to appreciate the illuminated volume..
