Nestled in a wooded enclave on a quiet residential street in Haddonfield, NJ is a site that captivated a young family from out of town looking to establish new roots and build their legacy home. Both spouses have professional backgrounds in education administration, so they approached this project similarly by methodically assembling a team of experts from its inception. Our own multidisciplinary team was uniquely qualified to partner with the architect to marry the interior design with the architecture, from programming through project management and turnkey FF&E installation. The client presented a range of overarching project goals, which were foundational to our design approach and creative problem solving; the result is a meticulous blend of functionality and aesthetics within the context of timeless details and enduring style.
The client’s desire for visual and physical connectivity of the first floor was the organizing backbone of the early programming phase. This informed partition configuration, location and scale of openings between spaces and to the outdoors, and the artful incorporation of expansive views within the main living spaces. By maintaining a sense of transparency and easy circulation throughout the house, we also addressed the various degrees in which the family wishes to entertain and host out-of-town guests. Envisioning this as the primary destination for either intimate or large celebrations with family and friends, we drew from lifestyle patterns throughout the year to provide ample space and seating for both entertaining and bonding together as a family. The generously-open first floor has defined activity zones via intentional placement of casework and furnishings.
En-suite bedrooms on the second floor make for inviting quarters for both kid sleepovers and visiting loved ones. With demanding work and family schedules, the client needed the ability to retreat to quieter and cozier areas and feel enveloped by a soothing environment. The fluidity of calming, neutral materials, finishes and color palettes are inspired by the imperfect natural textures found on site. Simultaneously, ample concealed storage throughout the home rids it of visual clutter. We embraced circadian rhythms and the ever-changing daylight quality, which filters through the surrounding landscape, to create the desired ambiance for every space - inherently promoting wellness.
We welcomed the pragmatic design requisite of seamlessly combining aesthetics and lifestyle—enter: active young children and a friendly watch dog. Every design element - hard and soft - was selected with durability and ease of use in mind. Livable stone and tile, performance fabrics, reclaimed timbers, brick, and character grade white oak flooring throughout are the embodiment of practical, sustainable living. Modern technological conveniences and amenities, including adaptive and remote lighting, temperature and security controls fully outfit the home, improving efficiencies of daily routines.
We’re so grateful to have partnered with a client that entrusted us to create this dream legacy home and multi-generational retreat for years to come. We honored that trust by upholding their family values and goals as our creative North Star. Through intentional architectural hierarchy, as well as classical proportions and scale of millwork, lighting and furnishings, we clearly defined each space with the longevity of timeless details and the personal touches that ultimately define a home.
